The NGCT entry in the Eastern Ontario Drama League one-act play festival this year was something new, on several fronts. It was the first performance of this Canadian play. It was the first play written by an emerging author, Roos Spanjers. And Roos directed the work, which is another first for her.
This play opens our minds to a gone-by time, when the Netherlands suffered under the Nazi occupation in World War II. It is also about the connections within a family that are catalyzed when today’s children are introduced to a treasure of stories that their great-grandmother shared with their mom about growing up as a teenager in Amsterdam during the Second World War. History is not just an exercise in school, it defines who we have become.
The play is based on real events.
AND ... this play at the Eastern Ontario Drama League One-Act Festival this year won the Margaret Shearman award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre. It was also nominated for four other awards - first time directing (Roos), acting (Roos), student involvement (Noriron) and best performance of an original play. Congratulations to everyone involved!
